Course curriculum

This course provides an in-depth exploration of medical trauma, healthcare dismissal, chronic illness, and systemic bias and their impact on clients' mental health and well-being. Participants will learn how repeated experiences of being dismissed, minimized, or disbelieved by healthcare providers can contribute to trauma, grief, identity changes, mistrust of helping professionals, and barriers to seeking care. The course examines the unique experiences of marginalized populations, including LGBTQ+ individuals, people living with chronic illness and chronic pain, individuals in larger bodies, and racial and ethnic minority communities. Clinicians will develop practical skills for recognizing medical trauma in therapy, utilizing validation as a therapeutic intervention, supporting client self-advocacy while addressing advocacy fatigue, navigating ethical considerations, and helping clients build trust, resilience, and empowerment while interacting with healthcare systems. Through research-informed discussion, clinical examples, and practical applications, participants will leave with actionable tools they can immediately incorporate into their practice.
